A market order tells the broker to buy or sell right now at the best price currently available. It prioritizes getting filled over getting a specific price, so it almost always executes quickly. The tradeoff is that the actual fill price can differ from the last quote you saw, especially in fast or thin markets, which is one source of slippage.
